TENDER RUIN

Tender Ruin continues Joshua Helius’ ongoing Frozen Flower series, initially created as a personal meditation on acceptance and impermanence. What began as an attempt to preserve fragile beauty gradually evolved into an exploration of attachment, restraint, and the human desire to resist inevitable change.

Through flowers encased in ice, the work examines the tension between preservation and transformation. While the frozen state appears protective, the cracks that emerge within the ice reveal the fragility of that protection. The series reflects on how acts of care, devotion, and preservation can unintentionally become forms of control or containment when extended beyond their natural limits.

Drawing from themes of transience, isolation, and emotional restraint, Tender Ruin considers the quiet tension that can exist within tenderness itself. The work reflects on the impossibility of preserving moments, people, or states of being indefinitely, suggesting that preservation may exist not in resisting change, but in allowing things to transform and conclude in their own time.

Tender Ruin は、Joshua Helius による継続的なシリーズ While it’s here の延長として制作された作品である。本シリーズは、壊れやすい有機物を氷の中に封じ込めることで、保存と変容の関係性を探求している。

氷によって一時的に留められた花々は、保護された状態にあるように見える一方で、時間の経過とともに内部に亀裂や歪みを生じさせる。これらの変化は、保存という行為そのものに内在する不安定さや、変化を留めようとする試みの限界を示唆している。

本作では、移ろい、抑制、そして不可逆的な変化を主題としながら、保存と拘束、保護と制御の境界について考察している。氷、花、亀裂といった物質的な現象を通して、Tender Ruin は、あらゆる存在が時間とともに変化していく過程そのものに視線を向けている。
