MATERIA
"MATERIA" is the first solo exhibition of hand-drawn works by Ross Verik. Positioned at the intersection of the biological, the alchemical, and the spiritual, the works emerge organically through a stream-of-consciousness drawing process. The resulting forms often evoke visceral, cellular, and morphogenic structures, as if matter itself were unfolding on paper. The exhibition title draws from alchemical philosophy, referencing the transmutation of the Prima Materia.
「MATERIA」は、ロス・ヴェリック初のドローイング個展です。本展の作品は、生物学、錬金術、そして精神世界が変わるところに深く根さしています。 これらの作品は、意識の流れに身を委ねて描くプロセスの中で、自ずと形を成したものです。 そこに描かれた姿は、ときに内臓や細胞の生々しさを感じさせ、生命が形作られていくプロセスそのものを彷彿とさせます。物質が意志を持って紙の上で形を変えていくかのような感覚を味わっていただければ幸いです。 本展のタイトルは、錬金術において万物の根源を指す『プリマ・マテリア』が、別の高次な存在へと生まれ変わる『変成-トランスミューテーション』のプロセスに由来しています。
About the Artist
Ross Verik is a Scottish multidisciplinary artist based in Tokyo. Born in Dundee, he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design before relocating to Japan in 2016. His graduate multimedia installation "Hospital" (2013) combined sculpture, video, and sound to explore patient anxiety and surgical transformation, leading to his inclusion in RSA New Contemporaries 2014 at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.
Alongside his visual art practice, Verik has been active in experimental electronic music since the early 2010s, beginning as a producer and vocalist in the industrial duo Surgyn, and touring extensively between 2010 and 2014. His current practice merges drawing, sound, and performance.
In Tokyo he has collaborated with music producer Demsky to organize the event series TRI-SHNA, and performs both solo and as VENA/KAVA - a butoh and music unit with dancer Kana Kitty. Verik is a member of the art collective The Odds of Tokyo, founded by Zoria Petkoska and Simon Kalajdjiev, with whom he collaborates on zines, events and live performances.
ロス・ヴェリックは、東京を拠点に活動するスコットランド出身のマルチディシプリナリー・アーティストです。ダンディー生まれ。ダンカン・オブ・ジョーダンストン美術デザイン大学にてBA（Hons） Fine Artを取得後、2016年に日本へ拠点を移しました。 卒業制作のマルチメディア・インスタレーション「Hospital」（2013）は、彫刻、映像、音響を組み合わせ、病床の人の不安や外科的変容をテーマに探求した作品で、本作品をきっかけにエディンバラのロイヤル・スコティッシュ・アカデミーで開催された「RSA New Contemporaries 2014」に選出されました。
ビジュアルアートの制作と並行して、2010年代初頭より実験的な電子音楽の分野でも活動しています。インダストリアル・デュオ「Surgyn」のプロデューサー兼ヴォーカリストとして活動し、2010年から2014年にかけて国内外でツアーを行いました。 現在の制作では、ドローイング、サウンド、パフォーマンスを横断的に展開しています。東京では音楽プロデューサーDemskyと共にイベントシリーズ「TRI-SHNA」を企画・開催し、ソロ活動に加え、舞踏家kana Kittyとの舞踏✕音楽ユニット「VENA/KAVA」としても活動しています。
また、Zoria Petkoska と Simon Kalajdjievが設立したアートコレクティブ「The Odds of Tokyo」のメンバーとして、ZINE制作やイベント、ライブパフオーマンスなどの共同プロジェクトに参加しています。
