EMOTIONAL PRINTING
Emotional Printing is an art–science project that questions how data derived from neural activity can become sensory forms.
Drawing from biological signals produced in neuroscience research, the project enacts a shift: scientific data leaves its analytical framework to be translated into printed matter and sound.
On paper and within the sonic space, these traces are treated as layers. Superimposed, fragmented, and sometimes altered, they evoke an archaeology of emotions, where each form functions as a remnant of a past experience.
Emotional Printing does not seek to represent the brain, but to materialize what emanates from it. The project explores the boundary between data and trace, measurement and perception, and questions how emotion can be read through material supports, at the intersection of contemporary creation and scientific research.
《Emotional Printing》は、神経活動に由来するデータがいかにして感覚的な形態へと変換され得るのかを問いかける、アートとサイエンスを横断するプロジェクトである。
神経科学研究の過程で生じた生体信号を出発点に、分析のためのデータはその枠組みを離れ、印刷物や音へと翻訳されていく。
紙の上、そして音の空間において、これらの痕跡は層として扱われる。重ね合わされ、断片化され、ときに変質しながら、それらは過去の体験の残滓として、「感情の考古学」を想起させる。
《Emotional Printing》は脳を表象することを目的とするのではなく、そこから立ち上がるものを物質化する試みである。
データと痕跡、計測と知覚のあいだにある境界を探りながら、感情がどのように物質的な支持体を通して読み取られ得るのかを問い、現代美術と科学研究の交差点に位置づけられている。
About the Artist
Mehdi Sicre is a postdoctoral researcher and artist based in Tokyo.
Born in Aix-en-Provence, France, he completed his doctoral training in Marseille before moving to Japan for his postdoctoral research.
At the RIKEN institute, he studies the brain circuits involved in emotions and behavior, research that directly informs his artistic practice.
His work explores an archaeology of emotions, attentive to the traces left by neural activity.
Biological data, prints, and sound translations overlap as layers to be read, like remnants of lived emotional experience.
At this porous boundary between neuroscience and contemporary creation unfolds the project Emotional Printing.
メフディ・シクルは、東京を拠点に活動するポスドク研究者でありアーティストである。
フランス・エクス＝アン＝プロヴァンス生まれ。マルセイユで博士課程を修了後、日本に渡りポスドク研究を行っている。
理化学研究所（RIKEN）では、感情や行動に関わる脳回路を研究し、その知見を自身の芸術表現へと直接的に結びつけている。
彼の作品は、神経活動が残す痕跡に目を向けた「感情の考古学」を探求する。
生体データ、印刷、音による変換は、感情体験の痕跡として読み解かれる層のように重なり合う。
神経科学と現代美術のあいだにあるこの開かれた境界に、《Emotional Printing》というプロジェクトが位置づけられている。
